Who´s Afraid of Designer Babies

Forget cloning. Predicting and modifying our genes at the embryonic stage is the REAL story that might impact on the human species. The knowledge gained from mapping the human genome when combined with the rapidly evolving science of assisted reproduction is providing the means to design our descendents. But the awesome potential of this technology has triggered a furore of sensationalist headlines voicing concerns about the possibility of a "Brave New World" scenario of ´designer babies´.

Who´s Afraid of Designer Babies follows a couple attempting to have a child who will be selected for its genetic ability to save its dying sibling´s life. The couple are being accused of creating Australia´s first designer baby. But is this really a designer baby, or are concerns about a terrifying hypothetical future delaying the provision of a high-tech medical solution to a very sick child?
